The Tennessee Volunteers have offered their vacant head coaching position to Southern Miss Golden Eagles coach Donnie Tyndall, and Tyndall is expected to accept, Gary Parrish of CBSSports.com reported Monday night.

It appears Tyndall will leave Southern Miss for Tennessee after two seasons.

Tyndall was 56-17 in two seasons as the head coach at Southern Miss, taking the Golden Eagles to the precipice of an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament in both seasons but ultimately falling short both times. The Golden Eagles made the final eight of the NIT in both of his seasons in Hattiesville, Miss. The Golden Eagles were Conference USA regular-season co-champions this past season before losing in the conference tournament semifinals.
He was the head coach of the Morehead State Eagles from 2006-12, winning two Ohio Valley Conference tournaments in his six seasons and earning a win in the 2011 NCAA Tournament as a No. 13 seed over No. 4 seed Louisville. Tyndall recruited Denver Nuggets forward Kenneth Faried to Morehead State, and the 2011 tournament win was in Faried's senior season.
Tyndall, 43, replaces Cuonzo Martin, who resigned at Tennessee last week to accept the head coaching job at California. Tennessee will not return its top three players from last season's Sweet 16 team. Jordan McRae and Jeronne Maymon were seniors, and junior Jarnell Stokes declared for the NBA Draft. Antonio Barton, another starter, was also a senior.
