After reportedly chasing Los Angeles Lakers coach Mike D’Antoni for its vacant head coaching position, Marshall has apparently hired on another D’Antoni... Mike’s brother, Dan.
Dan D’Antoni chosen as new Marshall coach
The brother of Mike D’Antoni hasn’t been a college coach since the 1970s.

I am proud to announce that Dan D'Antoni will be the next head basketball coach at Marshall University. #THEHERD pic.twitter.com/LxpD13FFnR
— Mike Hamrick (@TheHerdAD) April 24, 2014 Dan D’Antoni is currently an assistant under his brother for the Lakers and played for the Thundering Herd between 1966 and 1970, starring as a point guard. However, aside from the personal connections, this has to be one of the strangest college basketball hires over the past few years.
D’Antoni is 66 years old and last coached in college as a varsity assistant and head freshman team coach at Marshall after graduating in the 1970s. He coached at Socastee High School in South Carolina for 28 years, before leaving to be an assistant under his brother with the Phoenix Suns, the New York Knicks and the Lakers.
D’Antoni takes over a team that went 11-22 last year, and 4-12 in Conference USA.
