Michigan star Caris LeVert out for the season

The junior will have foot surgery after getting injured against Northwestern.

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

A day after Caris LeVert carried Michigan to a win over Northwestern, the Wolverines announced that their star player would be out for the year after sustaining a foot injury against the Wildcats.

Junior guard Caris LeVert of the University of Michigan men’s basketball team injured his left foot during Saturday’s (Jan. 17) game vs. Northwestern and is scheduled to have surgery this week. He will miss the remainder of the season following a 12-week recovery and rehabilitation period. LeVert had surgery on the same foot this past May.

LeVert has been far and away Michigan’s best player this season. He leads the Wolverines in points, rebounds, assists and steals. According to KenPom, he has been on the floor for 89.3 percent of available minutes, and he is used on a higher percentage of possessions than any other UM player. His combination of size, length, athleticism and shooting ability makes him a matchup nightmare for opponents.

As of now, here’s how banged-up Michigan basketball is:

Without LeVert, Michigan is going to struggle even more to make the NCAA Tournament. The Wolverines have already been having a rough season, with losses to NJIT and Eastern Michigan in non-conference season, and blowout losses to Purdue and Ohio State in conference play. This is beginning to look even more like a lost season in Ann Arbor.
