Kansas loses to West Virginia on missed layup at the buzzer

Kansas and West Virginia went back and forth all night on Monday in Morgantown. The Mountaineers struggled to shoot from the floor (37.5 percent) but forced Kansas into 14 turnovers to keep the game close.
West Virginia freshman Jevon Carter hit two huge three-pointers on back-to-back possessions late in the second half, but Kansas always seemed to have an answer. With the Jayhawks up one, Frank Mason III missed a shot and West Virginia had its last chance. That’s when star point guard Juwan Staten went coast-to-coast for the game-winning basket.
Kansas went for the home run on the inbounds pass, and Jayhawks forward Perry Ellis had a great chance for a go-ahead bucket. He missed a point-blank layup, and West Virginia won.
Staten was tremendous, finishing the game with 20 points and four assists in the win. Carter added 13 points and six rebounds off the bench, while Devin Williams chipped in eight points.
After the game, Staten couldn’t even muster the strength to stand on his own when talking to ESPN’s Holly Rowe.
The victory gives West Virginia its 20th win of the season (20-6). Kansas falls to 21-5. The Jayhawks’ lead in the Big 12 is down to 1½ games over Iowa State.
