SWAC basketball tournament 2015: Bracket, schedule and scores

It’s Texas Southern and everyone else in a typically weak SWAC field.

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

The SWAC Tournament doesn't have much star power, but there is still an NCAA Tournament bid up for grabs, so every team had extra motivation when they travel to the Toyota Center in Houston this week.

Texas Southern was the prohibitive favorite to win it all after running through the conference with a 15-2 record, and held on to beat Southern for the conference tournament crown.

It’s hard to tell how good the Tigers really are given their competition -- four of the 10 SWAC teams have 20 losses or more, and seven rank lower than 300th in the KenPom rankings. Whoever comes out of this conference may be forced to travel to Dayton for the First Four.

The format

Nine teams competed in this year’s tournament.. Alabama State and Southern are ineligible for the NCAA Tournament, but are allowed to compete in the SWAC tourney, which could have made things awkward if one of them end up winning it all. The bottom two teams have a play-in game to determine the No. 1 seed’s first opponent. The tournament otherwise follows a standard eight-team format.

The teams

  1. Texas Southern Tigers
  2. Alabama State Hornets
  3. Southern Jaguars
  4. Prairie View A&M Panthers
  5. Jackson State Tigers
  6. Alabama A&M Bulldogs
  7. Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils
  8. Alcorn State Braves
  9. Grambling State Tigers
