Bracketology: BYU solidifies its place in the NCAA Tournament

Three teams clinched bids on the Monday night of Selection Week, with the Northeastern Huskies claiming the Colonial Athletic Association crown despite a feverish rally by a star-crossed (and exhausted) William & Mary outfit that will remain on the short list of charter Division I members who have failed to qualify for the men's basketball championship. Meanwhile, the Huskies will make their first Tournament appearance since 1991.

Furman, winners of a half-dozen games over Division I opposition before arriving in Asheville for the Southern Conference Tournament, gave the Wofford Terriers a scare, before falling by three. The Terriers, making their fourth NCAA appearance in the last six years, will likely be a 12 seed when the field is revealed on Sunday -- and a definite upset consideration in the Round of 64.

The Iona Gaels, another team who would have fit in that category had they qualified, (the Gaels actually beat Wofford during the regular season) failed, falling to the Manhattan Jaspers, who will make their second consecutive appearance out of the Metro Atlantic.

With a RPI rank in the top 50, Iona will be discussed in the committee room this week but the Gaels' profile isn't quite as strong as it was in 2012 -- when their top 40 RPI got them one of the final spots in the field and a trip to Dayton, where they lost a thriller to BYU, of all teams.

The Cougars gave Portland no chance in their West Coast Conference semifinal late on Monday night, resulting in a win that might very well keep Dave Rose's team in the field for good. Of course, they can take it out of the committee's hands by defeating Gonzaga for a second consecutive time.

Other than a slight bump for BYU (and corresponding drop for Colorado State), the Tuesday bracket is largely unchanged from the Monday version. Expect things to stay pretty much the same until Thursday rolls around.

Horizon Championship, 7 p.m. (ESPN)
The top-seeded Valparaiso Crusaders host the Green Bay Phoenix, likely for a place on lines 12 or 13. The pair split their regular season meetings and the rubber match should quite competitive, considering the Phoenix won by a 51-50 count across the street from Lambeau Field, while the Crusaders won at the ARC by a 63-59 count exactly three weeks later.

NEC Championship, 7 p.m. (ESPN2)
Tuesday night, the St. Francis-Brooklyn Terriers, the No. 1 seed and host, will attempt to do what William & Mary could not -- namely, remove themselves from the list of dance invite-less charter Division I members. In the Terriers' way will be a Robert Morris Colonials squad that is looking for its first bid since 2010, which seems like an awfully long time ago. The Colonials played the Terriers close in Brooklyn, falling by four on January 9, but actually won in Moon Township, Pa., 66-58 on January 28.

Summit Championship, 9 p.m. (ESPN2)
It's a Badlands showdown in Sioux Falls, S.D., where the No. 1 seed, the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, will have a lot of support in their backyard as they attempt to make the field for the first time since the second of consecutive trips in 2013. To get there, the opposition will be quite familiar -- the defending champion, the North Dakota State Bison. This is yet another rubber match and each team won at home, with the Jackrabbits claiming a 68-58 decision in Brookings on Valentine's Day.
