The North Carolina Tar Heels will play for their 18th all-time ACC Tournament tile Saturday night thanks to a 71-67 upset win over top-seeded Virginia on Friday.
2015 ACC Tournament results and bracket: North Carolina upsets top-seeded Virginia 71-67
North Carolina is headed to the ACC Tournament championship game thanks to a hard-fought victory over regular season champion Virginia.
With the Cavaliers focusing much of their attention on slowing down UNC's Brice Johnson, fellow forward Justin Jackson took full advantage and was the star of stars on night four in Greensboro. The freshman standout scored a team-high 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting, including 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. Johnson (13) and Marcus Paige (14) also scored in double figures for the Heels.
Virginia nearly erased the deficit it had faced the entire night thanks to the late-game heroics of Malcolm Brogdon. The first team All-ACC performer scored a game-high 25 points, including 12 straight for the Cavaliers to pull them within one with less than a minute to play.
That was as close as UVA would get -- Marcus Paige's floater stretched the lead back to three with 44 seconds to play. A missed three-pointer from Justin Anderson on the other end allowed the Heels to salt the game away from the free-throw line.
North Carolina has not won the ACC Tournament since 2008, and has lost in the championship game in each of its last three appearances (2011-13).
