Rick Barnes is expected to be out as head basketball coach at Texas after 17 years on the job, according to 247 Sports and NBC Sports. New Texas AD Steve Patterson asked Barnes to make “significant changes,” like firing assistant coaches following Texas’ loss to Butler in the NCAA tournament, according to Jeff Goodman of ESPN. Barnes is now expected to resign on Monday.
Rick Barnes expected to be out at Texas, per report
Barnes has been the Longhorns’ coach since the 1998-99 season.

Barnes won over 69 percent of his games at Texas, finishing with a 402-180 career record. The Longhorns only failed to reach the NCAA Tournament once under his watch, but hadn’t advanced past the round of 32 since 2008.
Texas finished 20-14 this season, earning a No. 11 seed in the tournament before falling to Butler. The season was ultimately considered a disappointment for a Longhorns team that was No. 10 in the preseason polls. Texas finished only 8-10 in Big 12 play, placing sixth in the conference.
Barnes has been criticized for failing to produce more wins with a big money school like Texas and for an inability to take advantage of players like Kevin Durant (who lost in the Round of 32 his only year in college) and freshman Myles Turner, who is expected to be a top NBA draft pick in 2015.
