Gregg Marshall reportedly agrees to deal to stay at Wichita State

Gregg Marshall won’t be visiting Alabama after all and is reportedly staying put in Wichita.

Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall, one of the most sought-after coaching candidates each of the last several years, will not be leaving the Shockers any time soon. ESPN’s Rece Davis reports that Marshall reached a new deal to stay in Wichita.

Marshall was reportedly set to visit Alabama this week, but those plans have since been canceled. Marshall also turned down a previous offer to take the Texas coaching job.

Marshall coached Winthrop until 2007, when he left for a Wichita State program searching for a suitable replacement for Mark Turgeon. He missed the postseason his first year and had won the NIT by his third. Each year since that NIT championship in 2011, the Shockers have made the NCAA Tournament.

The first milestone came in 2013, when Marshall coached the Shockers to the program’s first Final Four since 1965. The Shockers then went undefeated through the regular season in 2013-14, but ran into Kentucky (the eventual national runner-up) in the third round, losing in what many considered the best game of the 2014 NCAA Tournament.

The Shockers won another Missouri Valley Conference regular-season title in 2014-15 and advanced to the Sweet 16 before falling to Notre Dame.

With Marshall off the table, Alabama’s search for a new coach will continue after firing Anthony Grant. Grant coached the Crimson Tide to a 117-85 record in six seasons, making the NCAA Tournament just one time.
