2015 Women’s NCAA Tournament bracket results: Connecticut, Notre Dame headed to the final

For the second straight season, the Connecticut Huskies and Notre Dame Fighting Irish will play for the women’s National Championship. Setting up the rematch, however, wasn’t easy with Notre Dame needing a late put-back to make the title game.

For much of the second half, it looked like Notre Dame was going to roll back into the championship game for the fourth time in five years. The Fighting Irish led, 64-52, with less than eight minutes to play in the game. Then, Notre Dame went ice cold. The Irish would only score two more points the rest of the way while South Carolina surged back into the game and took a 65-64 lead with a 13-0 run. With less than 30 seconds to play, Notre Dame gave the ball to star guard Jewell Loyd. Her go-ahead shot was off, but Madison Cable was there to save the day. Cable gathered the rebound and made the eventual game-winning layup, her only points of the night.

Connecticut’s path to the title game was a little smoother. The Huskies controlled their game against Maryland, pulling away for a 81-58 win. Morgan Tuck led the way for Connecticut with 24 points and nine rebounds in the victory. Connecticut will now play for its 10th National Championship, third in a row and fifth since 2009. Head coach Geno Auriemma is 9-0 in title games.

While the game will be a rematch of the 2014 championship -- a 79-58 Connecticut win -- it will also be a matchup from earlier this season. Connecticut crushed then-No. 2 Notre Dame, 76-58, in early December.
