The No. 1 Connecticut Huskies used a strong defense to defeat the No. 2 Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 63-53, on Tuesday night to win the 2015 Women's NCAA Basketball Tournament championship.

The Huskies held Notre Dame to 33.3 percent shooting on the night, including just 3-of-11 (27.3 percent) from beyond the arc. The Irish scored only 23 points in the first half, when UConn took an eight-point lead into the break.

UConn has won three consecutive NCAA titles for the second time in school history (2002-04), and captured its 10th championship with Tuesday night’s win.

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and Moriah Jefferson each scored 15 points to lead UConn. Both have been a part of the last three championship teams along with Breanna Stewart, who pulled down 15 rebounds in the win.

UConn vs. Notre Dame has been the best rivalry in women’s college basketball in recent years, with the schools meeting in the Final Four for five straight years. The Huskies have won three of those five meetings, beating the Irish in each of the last two national championship games.

Brianna Turner led Notre Dame with 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting and pulled down 10 rebounds in defeat.

UConn (38-1) ended its season with 37 straight victories, snapping the 22-game winning streak of Notre Dame (36-3).
