Duke, Louisville urging 5-star point guard to reclassify

The Blue Devils and Cardinals are pushing this guard to leave the 2016 class.

Louisville and Duke are reportedly urging five-star point guard Derryck Thornton to reclassify from 2016 to 2015 so he would be eligible to play next season, according to Scout. Thornton, who plays at Findlay Prep in Nevada, turns 18 next month.

The 6'1, 175-pound California guard currently lists offers from USC, Kentucky, Arizona, California, Duke, Louisville and many more among his suitors. He's currently ranked as the No. 9 recruit in the 2016 class and No. 1 player in the state of California, according to Rivals. It's no surprise that Duke and Louisville are after him.

Louisville won't have its starting backcourt from the beginning of last season with Terry Rozier jumping to the NBA and Chris Jones being dismissed from the program in February. Louisville is also losing wing Wayne Blackshear to graduation and small forward Shaqquan Aaron to transfer.

Duke is in a similar position. The Blue Devils are losing Quinn Cook to graduation and are likely to lose Tyus Jones to the NBA draft. Duke is preparing to replace four starters from the team that won the national championship, should Jones and Justise Winslow follow Jahlil Okafor to the NBA.

How good is Thornton? You may have seen this nasty crossover on Ben Simmons, the No. 1 recruit in the 2015 class headed to LSU.
