Michigan State’s Eron Harris suspended indefinitely following drunk driving arrest

The junior guard is expected to be a key player for the Spartans after transferring from West Virginia, but now his status is up in the air.

Michigan State junior guard Eron Harris has been suspended indefinitely following his arrest on July 1, according to Graham Couch of the Lansing State Journal.

Harris, 21, was arrested at 1:55 a.m. ET on July 1 after playing in Lansing’s Moneyball Pro-Am summer league. He faces charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and refusing a preliminary breath test. He’s set to be arraigned on July 17, and the OWI charge is a misdemeanor that comes with a maximum 93 days in jail and $500 fine.

Harris is a transfer from West Virginia who sat out last season due to NCAA transfer rules. The 6’3 guard averaged 17.2 points and 3.5 rebounds in 31.4 minutes per game as a sophomore in Morgantown. He shot 43.8 percent overall and an impressive 42.2 percent from three on over six long-range attempts per game.

Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo released a statement on the suspension:

“Eron Harris has been suspended indefinitely from all basketball related activities,” MSU coach Tom Izzo said in statement to the Lansing State Journal Tuesday night. “We hold our student-athletes to high standards, and the decisions that Eron made were irresponsible and unacceptable. Actions have consequences, and Eron must face those consequences in the legal system, in the court of public opinion, and within the program. Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken as the legal system runs its course.”

Harris is expected to play a big role for the Spartans next year, but now his status is up in the air thanks to this suspension. He has two years of eligibility left.
