No recruit in the country boosted his stock this summer as much as Wenyen Gabriel, a 6’9 forward from New Hampshire who dominated the final weeks of evaluation period on the Adidas circuit. After having zero DI scholarship offers last June, Gabriel held offers from every major program in the country following his strong play in July. Now he’s getting closer to making a college decision.

Gabriel cut his list to five on Wednesday, announcing that he’ll choose between Duke, Kentucky, UConn, Providence and Maryland. Kansas, who recently offered after Gabriel’s breakout summer, did not make the final cut.

Gabriel is a forward who benefited from a 4-inch growth spurt over the last two years. He’s retained some of his guard skills while growing into a versatile forward who can score inside or out.

Duke has one commit in the class of 2016 with consensus top-three player Jayson Tatum. The Blue Devils are expected to add an impact guard such as Frank Jackson or Dennis Smith, and are also the front-runner for ESPN’s No. 1 overall player, Harry Giles.

UConn already has two commitments with guard Alterique Gilbert and big man Mamadou Diarra. Maryland has one commit for the class in point guard Anthony Cowan. Kentucky and Providence do not have any verbal commitments in the class of 2016 at this point, assuming Kentucky big man Tai Wynyard reclassifies to 2015.
