Wake Forest led by 7 with 20 seconds left only to lose on an inexplicable buzzer beater

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Wake Forest led Virginia by seven points and had possession of the ball with just 20 seconds to play at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Tuesday night.

If you’re going to wind up losing in that situation, it might as well be on the ugliest and most cruel buzzer beater of the 2015-16 season to date.

That was Darius Thompson attempting his only shot of the game and handing the Demon Deacons their fifth straight loss.

The home crowd, as you might expect, was not thrilled.

The loss dropped Danny Manning’s Wake team to just 1-7 in ACC play, while Virginia improved to 5-3 in the league and 16-4 overall. The Cavaliers will head to Louisville on Saturday for a 1 p.m. tilt at the KFC Yum! Center, while the Deacs head to South Bend to face Notre Dame on Sunday.
