The Miami Hurricanes reeled in one of their biggest recruits in program history on Wednesday. Lonnie Walker, a 6’4 off-guard out of Reading, Pa. announced his commitment to Miami on Twitter:
Miami basketball lands 5-star shooting guard Lonnie Walker
Surprise! Elite shooting guard Lonnie Walker picked Miami over Villanova on Wednesday.

Walker is considered a five-star recruit by ESPN and ranked as the No. 19 prospect in the class of 2017 by the site. He joins fellow top-100 recruits Chris Lykes, a point guard from Maryland, and Deng Gak, a 6’10 power forward from Blair Academy in New Jersey, as well as New Zealand forward Samuel Waardenburg in Miami’s class of 2017.
Villanova was considered the favorite for Walker’s commitment, so this is a major development for Miami. He now becomes the crown jewel of what might be the best recruiting class of Jim Larranaga’s career. Larranaga’s class of 2016, now freshmen at Miami, are also in contention for that honor, with a group led by big man Dewan Huell and Bruce Brown.
The point is that Miami has been recruiting at an extremely high level lately, and it should put the Hurricanes in position to thrive for years to come.
Miami went 27-8 last season and lost in the Sweet 16. The Hurricanes are 1-0 so far this year.
