A bad start for St. John’s got worse on Tuesday night when Chris Mullin’s team suffered what might be the worst loss for a power conference team this season. Delaware State went into New York and came away with a 79-72 victory over the Red Storm. This is St. John’s fifth straight loss and a new low point in Mullin’s tenure.

How good is Delaware State, exactly? Not very. The Hornets finished just 7-25 last year in the MEAC and were off to a 1-5 start this season, with its lone win coming over DIII Clarks Summit.

Coming into the game, KenPom had Delaware State ranked as the tenth-worst team in the country.

St. John’s shot only 38.2 percent from the field in this game and failed to utilize any size advantage inside. If Mullin thought going winless at the Battle 4 Atlantis was bad, this is worse.

St. John’s can count consecutive losses to Minnesota, Michigan State, VCU, Old Dominion and now Delaware State. After an 8-24 debut season in the Big East, it doesn’t seem like Year II is going to get any better for Mullin.

If nothing else, the Johnnies have to hope this is rock bottom.
