Iowa State suspends Jameel McKay indefinitely

The Cyclones are going to have to win games without their best defensive big man.

Jameel McKay won’t be back with Iowa State any time soon. The senior center has been suspended indefinitely by head coach Steve Prohm, according to the Ames Tribune.

The Cyclones are already missing guard Naz Mitrou-Long, who is out for the season with a hip injury. Prohm had been rolling with a six-man rotation in recent games before McKay’s suspension.

McKay, who became eligible in the middle of last season as a community college transfer, gives Iowa State a dimension it lacked for most of former coach Fred Hoiberg’s tenure: an athletic big man who can protect the rim. McKay was averaging 12.4 points, nine rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game this season on 58.5 percent shooting from the field.

Iowa State is ranked No. 13 in the country, but has lost its last two games, to Texas A&M and West Virginia. Their first test without McKay will come on Saturday at Oklahoma State.
