Big 12 basketball tournament 2016 schedule and bracket: Titans arrive for second round

The big boys are in town at the Big 12 Tournament.

The Big 12 Tournament gets into full swing on Thursday. No. 1 overall seed favorite and Big 12 regular season champion Kansas, as well as potential National Player of the Year Buddy Hield of Oklahoma, will each swagger into Kansas City to truly tip off what could be the nation's best conference tournament.

Intra-state matchups will be the fare for the early afternoon, as No. 4 seed Texas takes on No. 5 seed Baylor before the Jayhawks face off with No. 8 seed Kansas State. Shaka Smart’s Longhorns have been on the rise of late, but could do themselves a world of good by avenging recent home losses to the Bears and Jayhawks in Kansas City. For Kansas, that coveted No. 1 national seed — which would likely come with a path to the Final Four that would end in Chicago — could be out of reach with a loss to the likely NIT-bound Wildcats.

In the evening, West Virginia’s swarming attack takes on TCU, which upset Texas Tech in Wednesday action, while Hield and Oklahoma take on Iowa State, which has gone just 5-6 since taking down Kansas at home. The Sooners have an outside shot at a No. 1 seed, but will almost certainly need to sweep through the Big 12 Tournament to get it. West Virginia could play its way toward the No. 2 line with a strong showing in Kansas City, and would take a significant hit if it loses to the Horned Frogs.
