CBI 2016: Bracket, schedule and scores

The College Basketball Invitational bracket is packed with mid-major talent.

The College Basketball Invitational (CBI) is another postseason tournament competing for a spot in an NCAA and NIT dominated landscape. Fortunately for hoops fans, there’s no such thing as too many games.

The CBI will pair off 16 mid-major programs in its ninth year of existence. This year’s field doesn’t include any power conference participants, but a slate that features former big dance Cinderellas Siena, Ohio and Morehead State has carved out a handful of quality hardwood matchups. Six of this year’s participants have recorded 20 wins or more this winter, and teams like Albany and Omaha who were overlooked by the NIT will have plenty to prove in March’s other bracket.

The tournament got underway Tuesday when Morehead State went north to beat Siena. The CBI will crown a champion in a best-of-three showdown that begins on March 28. Below, you’ll find all 16 participants and a schedule for the tournament from start to finish.

The format

The 16-team field will include eight first-round games, all played on campus sites. The winners will advance to the quarterfinals, after which the field will be re-bracketed. When it gets down to two teams, the finalists will play a best-of-three series to determine the CBI champion. The championship series will be televised on ESPNU.
