ACC Tournament 2016 schedule and bracket: Duke, Virginia Tech highlight second round

Duke hopes to avoid upset against NC State, while Virginia Tech takes on Florida State.

Mark Dolejs-USA TODAY Sports

The ACC Tournament moves into its second round Wednesday, with four matchups slated throughout the afternoon. No. 5 seed Duke headlines the day against No. 12 seed NC State, while No. 8 seed Pittsburgh takes on No. 9 seed Syracuse. Wednesday's winners advance to the quarterfinal round.

NC State and Florida State played their way into the second round Tuesday night, netting wins over Wake Forest and hapless Boston College, respectively. No. 11 seed Florida State meets No. 6 seed Virginia Tech in primetime, when the Seminoles hope to avenge their regular season 83-73 loss to the Hokies.

Pitt and Syracuse offer an intriguing Nos. 8-9 seeds matchup, since the Panthers beat the Orange in both meetings between the two this season, and as Gonzaga learned Tuesday night, third time’s the charm.

There was a time that No. 7 seed Clemson was garnering talk of a solid tournament bid, what with consecutive victories over Louisville, Duke and Miami in the same week back in January. The Tigers have since gone 5-7 to end the regular season, and it’ll take a win over No. 10 seed Georgia Tech on Wednesday and a miracle against No. 2 Virginia Thursday to even begin considering Clemson’s tournament chances.
