The women’s college basketball season is reaching its conclusion. Top overall seed Connecticut faces No. 4 seed Syracuse in the national championship game of the Final Four on Tuesday night, capping what’s been a fascinating NCAA Tournament.

On one level, it’s featured prototypical UConn dominance, with the 37-0 Huskies winning their five games by about a 40-point average, basically, which is an awful lot. But on another level, there’s been great parity. Washington made a run to the Final Four as a No. 7 seed before Syracuse, itself something of a Cinderella, ended that run on Sunday. There was just one top seed in the Final Four, and it was the team everyone knew would be there from the start.
The Huskies are rightfully a commanding favorite. They have the best player in the country in senior Breanna Stewart, who’s trying to cap her career by winning a fourth national championship in four years. They have practically an entire rotation’s worth of elite players, including two others — Moriah Jefferson and Morgan Tuck — who drew Wooden Award consideration. It’ll be downright shocking if they don’t beat Syracuse, and it’ll be a little surprising if the game is close.
And yet, it’s going to be a spectacle either way. There are two possible outcomes here: One is that Connecticut wins, prolonging one of the longest and most remarkable stretches of athletic dominance in American athletic history. Another is that Syracuse wins, denying the Huskies a four-year sweep of the national crown and handing them a practically unparalleled upset. They’d both be huge news stories worthy of celebration, and the game could be good, too.
