Democratic VP candidate Tim Kaine says he’ll bring back Kansas-Missouri ‘Border War’ rivalry

Could a politician really bring back one of college basketball’s fiercest rivalries?

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY

For the past decade, some of college basketball’s most prominent rivalries have been collateral damage in the ever-unfolding and football-centric world of conference realignment.

Arguably the chief example in this trend is the termination of the “Border War” rivalry between Missouri and Kansas, which had played 267 men’s basketball games before the Tigers left the Big 12 for the SEC in 2012. The two teams haven’t played since then, and Kansas coach Bill Self has been quoted multiple times saying he doesn’t think that’s going to change anytime soon.

That might not be the case if Democratic Vice Presidential candidate Tim Kaine has anything to do with it. The current Virginia Senator, and University of Missouri graduate, confirmed on Twitter Tuesday that getting the two programs to play one another is on his docket.

The most recent meeting between the two teams came on Feb. 25, 2012, when Kansas overcame a 19-point second half deficit to win an 87-86 overtime thriller between a pair of top-10 squads. The Jayhawks lead the all-time series, 172-95.
