When North Carolina announced Joel Berry broke his hand, how he did it seemed to be a mystery. As it turns out, Berry broke his hand on a door after losing to Theo Pinson and a UNC game manager in a video game, according to Roy Williams.

Berry was an integral part of their team and was awarded the Most Outstanding Player award during UNC’s title run in the 2017 NCAA tournament. The stand-out point guard is projected to be out with his hand injury for four weeks.

Berry was expected to be one of the best players on the team and is one of the best guards in the country. Losing him for the first month of the season is no small blow to UNC.

Though he should return in time for the start of their ACC schedule, there’s no guarantee that he’ll remain on track with his timetable. And if UNC starts this season off on the wrong foot, it could spell trouble for them down the line.

Luckily for UNC, they do have a bit of depth at guard. And this could turn into a silver lining for the team in trying to develop that talent. Behind Berry, they’ve got freshman guard Jalek Felton, Raymond Felton’s nephew, and sophomore guard Seventh Woods.

This turns into an opportunity for them to hammer out spots in the Tarheels’ rotation going forward and could make the team better in the long run.

Still, losing a talent like Berry is never something you want to see for a team. Especially not under these circumstances. Berry made a mistake and it’s going to cost the team. But he’ll learn from it in the long run, and hopefully his hand heals just fine and becomes a better person from it.
