Vermont senior guard-forward Kurt Steidl has been a contributor for the Catamounts for four seasons. This year, the program made its first NCAA tournament since 2012, which meant Thursday’s game against Purdue was Steidl’s tournament debut.
Vermont senior Kurt Steidl suffers ugly knee injury in first ever NCAA tournament game
The worst thing about March Madness.
In one of the sadder scenes of the day, Steidl went down during the first half with a non-contact left knee injury. Steidl got to his feet with the help of a team trainer, but he didn’t look like a man primed to return to the game.
Steidl is the all-time leader in America East games played, with 136. This year, he’s averaging 8 points per game, the third year in a row he’s at least reached that threshold. He’s chipping in 4.4 rebounds per game and shooting better than 80 percent at the foul line, as he’s done every year of his career.
The point is that Steidl’s been a steady, veteran cog for the Catamounts for a long time. The team hasn’t made the Dance since 2012, and Thursday was a great chance for Steidl and the team’s other seniors to make a mark before departing. Seeing seniors get hurt in the tournament is the single worst thing about it.
