The Fighting Irish will take on the Mountaineers in what should be an exciting Round 2 matchup.

The No. 4 seed West Virginia Mountaineers will face the No. 5 Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the second round of the NCAA tournament after both teams barely escaped potential upsets in Round 1.

Though they pulled away at the end, the Mountaineers at times appeared to be in danger of being upset by No. 13 Bucknell. The Bison pulled within five points of the Mountaineers multiple times throughout the second half, though West Virginia ultimately came out with an 86-80 victory. Guard Tarik Phillip scored a team-high 16 points off the bench, adding two rebounds and two assists.

Notre Dame, meanwhile, came this close to being upset by No. 12 Princeton. Had Devin Cannady sunk his long three-point attempt at the buzzer, the Tigers would’ve more than likely replaced the Fighting Irish in Saturday’s action. Instead, Notre Dame advances to the second round for the third consecutive year.

West Virginia will likely try to speed up the tempo in this matchup, while Notre Dame tries to do the opposite. The Mountaineers excel when the game is at a quick pace, while the Fighting Irish prefer to slow things down and execute on offense — likely through Bonzie Colson and Matt Farrell, who combined to score 34 points in Notre Dame’s win over Princeton.
