Northwestern has a tough task ahead in the West Region.

However, Northwestern’s victory over No. 9 Vanderbilt didn’t come as easily or without drama. With 17 seconds left, the Commodores led 66-65, and Northwestern was inbounding the ball. Inexplicably, Vandy’s Matthew Fisher-Davis fouled Northwestern’s Bryant McIntosh as he was advancing the ball up the court, sending him to the line with a chance to take the lead. He made both shots, and Fisher-Davis’ mistake, which he later called a “dumb-ass foul,” would end up costing Vandy the win.
The victory gave Northwestern its first-ever NCAA tournament win — Thursday marked the Wildcats’ first berth in the Big Dance. We’ll see if they can go even further in the tournament, but it won’t be easy going up against No. 1 Gonzaga.
