Rhode Island lost to Oregon in the NCAA tournament, but please enjoy its bench fun

It was a simpler time, a better time.

Before the Rhode Island Rams fell to the Oregon Ducks and the bench was reduced to the tears we so often see when a March run comes to a devastating close, they were having fun.

That’s how the emotion can swing in the NCAA tournament. One moment you’re getting some push-ups in, the next the game’s over and so is your season. The celebrating player is Will Leviton, a walk-on who’s made a habit of this sort of thing.

Playing on the anniversary of the school’s first Sweet 16 berth in 1988, the No. 11 Rhode Island Rams couldn’t punch their ticket to the Big Dance’s second weekend this year. URI fell to No. 3 Oregon, 75-72, and the Ducks finished the game on 7-0 run in the game’s final 2:01.

Now we miss out on a Cinderella vs. Cinderella. URI would have played Michigan, which has had a wild March, including surviving a minor plane crash before the Big Ten tournament that the Wolverines went on to win.

We will remember the Rams as they were. Dancing and working out on the bench when everything was still all good.
