The game leads off the Friday night action.

The Gamecocks are coming off a tournament run with wins over No. 8 Arizona State, No. 12 Quinnipiac, and No. 3 Florida State in the Elite Eight to advance out of the Stockton Region. Stanford, from the Lexington Region, defeated No. 7 Kansas State, No. 3 Texas, and No. 1 Notre Dame in the last three rounds.
The Gamecocks are led offensively by Allisha Gray, who averages 29 points per game, along with 7.4 rebounds. South Carolina also gets help from A’ja Wilson and Kaela Davis, who both average 28 points per game. Stanford has two players who average over 30 points per night in Erica McCall and Karlie Samuelson.
South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley and Stanford’s Tara VanDerveer are quite familiar with each other. In 1990, VanDerveer’s Stanford team posted a semifinal victory over Virginia, which Staley was on as a sophomore guard in the 1990 Final Four.
The two also won a gold medal in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, with VanDerveer being the head coach. Staley has yet to beat VanDerveer as either a player or a coach.
