Texas Southern earned the SWAC Tournament’s No. 1 seed for the second year in a row this season, and they lead a field of eight other HBCUs into this year’s league championship. Though also the top seed in last year’s tournament, the Tigers were bounced in the semifinals by eventual tourney champs Southern.
SWAC basketball tournament 2017: Bracket, schedule, and scores
Texas Southern leads the SWAC into the league’s tournament for the second-straight year.

This year, Texas Southern was able to complete what they couldn’t in 2016, winning the conference tournament over No. 2 seed Alcorn State in a close championship game.
Alcorn State has played tremendously this year, posting a 16-12 overall record and 13-4 in the conference. Those marks have elevated the Braves to the SWAC’s No. 2 overall team, but Montez Robinson’s team won’t get a chance to enjoy the fruits of those labors, since Alcorn is ineligible for NCAA postseason play this year due to academic progress rate problems. The Big Dance is out of the question.
The format
Just the top eight teams in the conference will participate in the SWAC Tournament with no teams receiving a bye. The first-round games take place on the higher seeded team’s home floor before the semifinal round commences in Houston’s Toyota Center on March 10. The finals will go off on Saturday.
