As it turns out, Thad Matta’s 13th season as the head men’s basketball coach at Ohio State was his last. The school announced in a press release Monday afternoon that Matta will no longer coach the Buckeyes, effective immediately.

Matta had been the head coach at Ohio State since 2004, guiding the Buckeyes to the Final Four in both 2007 and 2012. He ranks as the school’s all-time leader in both wins (337) and games coached (460). Under his watch, OSU won at least 20 games in 12-consecutive seasons (2005-2016), also a school record.

Ohio State had made the NCAA tournament in seven consecutive season before missing out on the Big Dance in each of the last two. The Buckeyes’ 2016-17 season was the worst of the Matta era, as the team finished 17-15 and missed out on postseason play entirely.

Matta has been dealing with foot and back injuries for several years, most of those related to a botched back surgery in 2007. He has overall mark of 439-154 for a career that also includes stops as the head coach of Xavier and Butler.
