Boise State basketball coach Leon Rice said he would walk across the Boise River if Broncos fans could sell out their home arena this season. It happened on Saturday night when Boise State edged San Diego State, 83-80, in a thrilling Mountain West showdown.
Boise State basketball coach literally crosses river to keep promise after fans sell out arena
“Son of a nutcracker, that’s cold.”

Rice kept up his end of the bargain:
What’s it like to walk across a river in January? Take Rice’s word for it:
“Son of a nutcracker, that’s cold.”
What a delightful turn of phrase.
Boise State hoops is quietly in a golden era under Rice, winning 20 or more games the last five seasons. This could be his best team yet: The Broncos are 15-3 and 5-1 in conference. Defense is the backbone of the team, ranking No. 22 in efficiency, per KenPom.
Also: The Broncos have a legit star in senior wing Chandler Hutchison. All Hutchison did against San Diego State on Saturday was drop a career-high 44 points:
We’ve been projecting Hutchison as a first-round NBA draft pick. KenPom now has him in the top-10 for the national player of the year race, too.
The Mountain West seems likely to come down to Nevada vs. Boise State this season. They play for the first time this Saturday, Jan. 20.
