College basketball will have its fourth new No. 1 team on the young season. You can thank Admiral Schofield and the Tennessee Volunteers for that.
The weekend college basketball went wild
No. 1 Gonzaga and top-10 Kentucky were both knocked off to highlight fun weekend in college hoops.

No. 7 Tennessee knocked off top-ranked Gonzaga, 76-73, in one of the best games of the season so far on Sunday. It was a showcase of two teams with legitimate Final Four aspirations trading daggers and making athletic plays on both sides of the court for 40 minutes. Tennessee held on late thanks to the heroics of Schofield, who finished with 30 points by shooting 12-of-22 from the floor and 6-of-10 from three-point range.
Schofield’s final triple gave the Vols the lead for good.
Schofield is a strong 6’6 forward who is playing the best basketball of his career as a senior. He entered averaging 16 points, six rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. He’s not Tennessee’s best player — that’s Grant Williams, who put up 16 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists before fouling out — but he’s breakout game is more proof that this Vols team deserves legitimate consideration as a national title front-runner.
Tennessee is now 7-1 with its lone loss coming in overtime to Kansas, who should be the new No. 1 in the polls. Rick Barnes’ team can beat you with either power or skill, ranking in the top 15 of both offensive and defensive efficiency so far, per KenPom. It’s a team that relies almost exclusively on juniors and seniors and has proven it has the makeup to hang with anyone in America.
Tennessee’s win was the perfect bow on what was a wild weekend in college basketball. Here’s everything you might have missed.
Kentucky hit a halfcourt shot to force OT ... and still lost to Seton Hall
If Gonzaga-Tennessee was the best played game of the weekend, Kentucky-Seton Hall was the most exciting. In a tie game with under 10 seconds left, Seton Hall star guard Myles Powell squared up a Kentucky defender and hit this ridiculous step-back, double-clutch jumper to put the Pirates ahead.
The No. 9 Wildcats had only 1.5 seconds left while inbounding under their own basket. That’s when Keldon Johnson hit a halfcourt runner to send the game into OT:
The teams went back and forth in overtime, but Seton Hall got the last laugh on a Myles Cale three in the closing seconds. Powell finished with 28 points, Cale finished with 17 points, and the Pirates picked up a huge non-conference win in front of a rowdy crowd at Madison Square Garden.
Kentucky shot only 5-of-20 from three-point range. It’s only Kentucky’s second loss of the season, but as we noted earlier this year, there are some real reasons why this Wildcats team might struggle to live up to their preseason hype.
Marquette takes down No. 12 Wisconsin
Don’t look now but Marquette can suddenly play a little ... defense? The Golden Eagles finished No. 12 in offensive efficiency last season, but missed the NCAA Tournament because the defense checked in at No. 183. This year’s Golden Eagles are more balanced, and it showed in a 74-69 overtime win over a tough Badgers team.
Wisconsin senior star Ethan Happ went off for 34 points and 11 rebounds on 16-of-21 shooting, but Marquette was able to get enough stops late to hang on for the win. Markus Howard, Marquette’s star guard, finished with 27 points, while brothers Sam and Joey Hauser combined for 28 points to help pace Marquette in the victory.
Brad Davison, in case you were wondering, finished with zero points in 33 minutes for Wisconsin.
This Marquette team has more balance than a year ago, now sitting No. 32 in offensive efficiency and No. 43 on the defensive end. This will be an NCAA Tournament if they can keep getting stops.
Kansas almost falls to New Mexico State
Kansas will be No. 1 in the polls on Monday, but it barely beat New Mexico State on Saturday, hanging on for a 63-60 win. Dedric Lawson — who just might be your national player of the year so far — was terrific down the stretch, scoring the Jayhawks last 14 points to secure the win.
Lawson finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds to move Kansas to 9-0. Despite being the undefeated new No. 1 team, the Jayhawks remain far from convincing. Part of that is because of the up-and-down season of Lagerald Vick, who has been Kansas’ best player at times but was benched again on Saturday for behavior coach Bill Self found unacceptable:
Lagerald Vick was absent from the starting lineup once again for Kansas, as Self sat him down for the second straight game.
”He had a really bad Thursday,” Self said. “Let’s just leave it at that. Hopefully those days are behind us.”
Tyus Battle beat Georgetown in the final seconds
Syracuse trailed Georgetown by 13 at halftime on Saturday, but completed a brilliant comeback win thanks to this game-winner from star junior Tyus Battle. Battle had 26 points on the night and is establishing himself as one of the top guards in the country this season.
Play of the weekend
Back to Gonzaga-Tennessee for a moment .. how about this block by Brandon Clarke? Clarke, a transfer from San Jose State, is having a superstar level impact for the ‘Zags this season by establishing himself as one of the best defensive players in the country.
This is the type of play that proves it.
College basketball scores
Next week is going to be great, too. Gonzaga vs. North Carolina on Saturday highlights the week.
