Kentucky basketball picked a bad year for an all-access Facebook show

Or maybe a good one! If the Wildcats somehow turn this season around.

Kentucky basketball is pulling back the curtains with a new 10-episode “docu-series” that will debut on Facebook this Saturday. The show promises to give the rabid members of Big Blue Nation a behind-the-scenes look of what it’s really like to be a member of John Calipari’s Wildcats.

From the press release (emphasis mine):

Embedded in the lives of the athletes, staff, and coaches, the series goes behind-the-scenes during the team’s journey to greatness in the 2017-18 season. The show will not only explore the action on the court, but also the life of student athletes and the social responsibility that comes from being in the national spotlight.

About that.

Kentucky is currently having its worst season since 2013

That was the year Nerlens Noel tore his ACL, Kentucky missed the NCAA tournament, and promptly lost to Robert Morris in the first round of the NIT.

This year’s team is better than that ... probably. Remember: That Noel-less squad still finished 21-12. Right now, Kentucky is is 17-8 and 6-6 in the SEC. They have lost three straight and are currently unranked.

Kentucky does not have a sure-fire top-10 draft pick this year, though Kevin Knox could sneak his way in. The team does not have much shooting. It is the youngest team Calipari has ever coached. It often feels like they’re playing four power forwards at the same time.

The last Coach Cal team that failed to meet expectations like this was ... the Julius Randle-led squad in 2014. That team made it all the way to the national title game as a No. 8 seed.

Maybe Kentucky will do it again! I wouldn’t count on it, but it would make for some great “docu-series” content.

This looks like it will either be a disaster or remarkably inspiring. That’s a win either way.
