The Kansas Jayhawks have reigned supreme in the Big 12 Conference regular season for well over a decade. On Saturday top seed Kansas will try to extend that dominance into the championship game of the 2018 Big 12 Tournament against the West Virginia Mountaineers (6 p.m. ET, ESPN).

Kansas has claimed or shared the top spot in the conference for each of the last 14 seasons, but that hasn’t always translated into success in the Big 12 Tournament. In their previous 13 conference tourneys the Jayhawks have won only seven tournament titles, including just once in the previous four seasons.

That can change on Sunday if Kansas continues to cruise as it did with wins over Oklahoma State and Kansas State in the first two rounds in Kansas City.

Malik Newman has been on fire for Kansas during the Big 12 Tournament, hitting 9-for-14 (.643) from distance while averaging 26 points in both Jayhawks wins.

No. 3-seed West Virginia dispatched No. 2 Texas Tech in the semifinals on Friday night behind 22 points from Daxter Miles

Kansas won both regular season matchups over West Virginia, winning 71-66 on the road on Jan. 15 followed by a 77-69 victory at Allen Fieldhouse on Feb 17.

West Virginia vs. Kansas news & notes

Despite playing without injured sophomore center Udoka Azubuike and still beating Kansas State by 16 points in Friday’s semifinals, Kansas coach Bill Self didn’t sound satisfied with his team’s performance, per the Associated Press:

“I thought they played better than us,” he insisted after an 83-67 victory Friday night, “but I thought a lot of it was self-inflected. We couldn’t guard them and offensively we weren’t very smart.

“If I sleep two hours tonight,” Self added, “it’ll be more than I probably think I should.”
