The NCAA Tournament will trim its ranks from 24 down to the Sweet 16 with Sunday’s conclusion of the second round, with nearly everyone looking forward to what UMBC can do for an encore.

The Retrievers not only beat No. 1 Virginia on Friday night to become the first men’s No. 16 seed to win a first-round game, but it was a blowout. UMBC won by 20, one of the largest point differentials in the opening round.

Sunday’s matchup is unique and not just because it’s the first time a No. 16 seed has advanced to the second round. Facing Kansas State (7:45 p.m. ET, truTV), this is just the third time a No. 9 seed has been the lower seed in an NCAA Tournament game. Penn was a No. 9 seed in 1979 that beat No. 10 St. John’s in a regional final, then in 2013 No. 9 Wichita State beat No. 13 LaSalle in the Sweet 16.

In the Midwest Region, No. 3 Michigan State continues their weekend in Detroit with a matchup against No. 11 Syracuse (2:40 p.m. ET, CBS). The Spartans are looking for their 14th Sweet 16 trip under Tom Izzo, and their first since 2015.
