Marshall captured the 2018 Conference USA Tournament with a Saturday victory over Western Kentucky. Jon Elmore scored 27 in the win for the Thundering Herd, who was a No. 4 seed in Frisco, Texas.

Middle Tennessee was the top seed but an early upset denied them of a second straight tournament title.

The stakes

Conference USA is likely a one-bid league, with Middle Tennessee at No. 27 the only team in the conference ranked in the top 50 in RPI. With a 33-3 conference record over the last two years the Blue Raiders are the class of the conference, including 16-2 this season.

But their bubble may have burst with an overtime quarterfinal loss on Thursday night to Southern Mississippi, the No. 9 seed in the tournament.

Old Dominion (24-6, 15-3) and Western Kentucky (22-9, 14-4) are the second and third seeds, respectively. The Hilltoppers beat the Monarchs in both regular season meetings, and did so again in the semifinals.

Middle Tennessee’s only two conference losses in the regulars season were to Marshall.

The format

All 12 Conference USA teams make the tournament, with the top four seeds getting byes to the quarterfinal round. The single-elimination tournament takes place from March 7-10 on two different courts at Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas.
