Welp, USF’s basketball arena is sponsored by BEER

Not many D1 arenas are sponsored by alcoholic beverages.

USF’s on-campus basketball arena is getting a new, boozy name. On Tuesday, the school officially announced that it would be renamed Yuengling Center.

Per Joey Knight, the deal is good for at least 10 years. Yes, you’re probably wondering how weird it is for a school-owned arena to be sponsored by beer, but for starters, the Sun Dome does sell beer, unlike most college arenas. And, yes, you can buy Yuengling there, too.

USF’s new arena will be just one of very few DI school arenas sponsored by beer. Colorado’s Coors Event Center was named after the beer in September 1990 in honor of a $5 million gift from the Adolph Coors Foundation.

Colorado University also owns the arena, like USF. As for other collegiate arenas named after drinks besides these two, the closest would be the Dunkin Donuts Center, which hosts Providence basketball and hockey. The Milwaukee Panthers out of the Horizon League play at Miller Park, too.

Yuengling actually has a strong presence in Tampa with a brewery in the area that lies just two miles from the arena. The Florida-based brewery is one of three breweries Yuengling has, both the others are in Pennsylvania.

There’s a strong craft brewery presence in Tampa too, so this is a smart business move for Yuengling.

While you might not be able to get a cold Yuengling at USF’s arena anytime soon, it’s a good move for USF’s community presence in Tampa.
