Orlando wide receiver Trey Griffey, son of baseball great Ken Griffey Jr., has committed to play college football for the Arizona Wildcats. He was rated a three-star by most recruiting services, meaning he should be a solid addition to new coach Rich Rodriguez' scheme, which will get more receivers involved than the previous coaching staff's offense did.

If you’re like most of us, you probably recall young Griffey from moments like this one. Now look what’s gone and happened. Elsewhere, many top recruits and even some young college players are named after Shaquille O’Neal. We are all so incredibly old.

Also in the running for the Kid’s kid’s services was Arizona State, which he visited last week, and about eight other FBS programs. At six-foot-two and 190 pounds, he made a good impression at the 2012 Under Armour high school all-star game, with our own Bud Elliott saying he “definitely impressed” at practices, where he was under the advisement of Keyshawn Johnson.

Regarding his famous father, he knows he has a reputation to contend with:

“Everybody says I chose football because I couldn’t live up to my dad’s standards,” says Trey, who [broke] receiving records, many held by Florida State standout Kenny Shaw, at Orlando’s Dr. Phillips High School.

“Let people talk,” says Trey, whose senior season thrust him onto the high-profile recruiting scene. “You know what you can do, but you also want to prove to other people who don’t want to believe in you, who believe you get here for other reasons, that you don’t earn it. We’re out here being All-Americans. You can’t tell who’s who.”
