Prep WR JaQuay Williams commits to Texas A&M

The former Auburn signee will remain in the SEC.

The Texas A&M Aggies have been on fire on the recruiting trail of late in the 2014 class, but got some good news in the ever-expanding 2013 class by landing the top prep wide receiver in the country in Fork Union Military Academy’s JaQuay Williams on Sunday.

The 6-4, 205-pound Williams is a consensus four-star prospect who signed with Auburn coming out of high school, but failed to qualify. In late September, the Georgia native committed to the Tigers again before taking visits to Georgia and Texas A&M and then re-opening his recruitment when Gene Chizik was fired. A final official visit to College Station sealed the deal.

Williams choose A&M over finalists Auburn, Georgia, and South Carolina and is the 32nd pledge in the class for head coach Kevin Sumlin.

The Aggies have already proven that the Airraid offense can excel in a conference known for fierce defenses and have a record-setting freshman quarterback who is set to make further history by becoming the first freshman to win the Heisman.

The future looks even brighter for the Aggies than the present and recruits are taking notice.

Williams saw it as the ideal situation for him ($):

It was a great fit for me. I just got off the phone with Coach Sumlin right after you called and they were real happy. I trusted everything the coaches were saying. They have a freshman quarterback and he’s going to be there for a while. I won’t have to worry about a new quarterback coming in. I can just focus on building that chemistry and help A&M win a championship. A&M had everything I was looking for.

The loss of Ryan Swope and another big-bodied receiver in Uzoma Nwachukwu will open up some playing time for young players next season, which surely made the Aggies even more appealing for Williams.

A big-bodied receiver who can win contested matchups over the middle and in the redzone, Williams has the potential to become a security blanket for Manziel. While not an elite athlete in terms of overall speed and quickness, the Georgia product is a good athlete for his size.

Besides seriously threatening Longhorn recruiting hegemony in the state of Texas, landing Williams proves that the Aggies can take on SEC powers like Georgia and South Carolina to win battles for recruits from the deep South.

All hail the SEC/Johnny Football recruiting impact.
