TCU Recruiting: ATH Ty Slanina Pledges To Horned Frogs

After a slow start to the 2013 recruiting process, the TCU Horned Frogs have now doubled the size of their class in the last week, following Tuesday's commitment from East Bernard, Texas, athlete Ty Slanina, as first reported by Victoria, Texas, sports writer Mike Forman. Slanina joins recent commit Paul Whitmill, a linebacker from Bastrop, Texas, who made a Friday pledge to head coach Gary Patterson's squad.

A former Texas A&M commitment, Slanina held offers from Arizona, Baylor, Mississippi State, Stanford, Texas Tech, Washington State and others. The 6-foot, 180-pound Slanina is considered a four-star prospect by 247Sports, while Rivals and Scout both classify him as a three-star recruit.

Slanina is the quarterback in East Bernard’s triple-option offense, plays safety on defense and also won the 2A state long jump title just over a week ago at the UIL state meet. While “darting quickness” wouldn’t quite be the best way to describe Slanina, he accelerates quickly and has strong long speed. However, he doesn’t show any evidence of jump- or slide-cutting ability, as his best attribute besides his pure speed is his understanding of how to affect the angles of defenders.

Recruited by Texas A&M as a safety, TCU offered as a wide receiver. If Slanina does stay at that position in college, he’ll have to learn the craft of route-running and, since he plays quarterback for his high school, it’s not clear what type of hands he has. Still, his speed should play well in the slot and if offense doesn’t work out, he could make the switch to defense and have a strong chance to contribute.
