Texas Tech Recruiting 2013: Davis Webb Commits To Red Raiders

After missing out on top targets Tyrone Swoopes (the Whitewright, Texas, quarterback who committed to the Longhorns), J.T. Barrett (an Ohio State pledge from Rider High School in Wichita Falls, Texas), Cody Thomas (a product of Colleyville Heritage High School who committed to OU) and Southlake Carroll’s Kenny Hill (currently pledged to Texas A&M), the Red Raiders moved down their list to pick up Webb, who had offers from Indiana, Iowa, and Utah State.

Webb is unranked by Rivals, rated as a two-star prospect by Scout and a three-star recruit by 247Sports. Though he is classified as a pro-style QB, the former Keller High signal-caller gained nearly 400 yards on the ground as a junior. As the rushing yardage would indicate, Webb is hardly a statue in the pocket and shows solid mobility, though he likely won’t be asked to run much at Texas Tech.

In the pocket, Webb has a bit of a low release as a result of not keeping his elbow as high as most quarterback coaches would prefer. At times, he can attempt to throw the ball back across his body, the type of dangerous passes that don’t play as well at the college level. Webb can also fit the ball into relatively small windows across the middle of the field when he needs to add velocity to his passes.

Will Texas Tech regret not offering more highly-touted in-state prospects, like Devante Kincade of Dallas’ Skyline High School or Cedar Hill’s Damion Hobbs? Only time will tell, but what is clear at this time is that the Red Raider offense isn’t a strong fit for dual-threat quarterbacks like them.
