Shane Morris, Deshaun Watson, Other QBs Shine At IMG 7-On-7 National Championship

The following is a list of quarterbacks who stood out to me while covering the IMG Madden Football 7-on-7 National Championship Tournament in Bradenton, Fla.

Shane Morris, Warren (MI) De La Salle HS. Morris did not impress during pool play, as his Michigan squad dropped several games. But he was much better during the six tournament games, displaying a big arm, solid accuracy, and quickly reading the defense. Fans of the Michigan Wolverines will be very happy, as their commitment also looked good throwing on the run. He carried his team that was without a few of its normal stars to victory over some very talented teams on Sunday. The fistful of interceptions he threw against Team Tampa are more of a reflection of him needing to attempt to fit the ball into very tight windows and take major chances for his team to have a shot at winning.

Pete DiNovo, Tampa (Fla.) East Lake HS. DiNovo doesn’t have a huge arm or incredible mobility, but he was smart, patient and accurate throughout the tournament. He realized that at least one of the incredible receivers at his disposal would find a way to get open. It was his job to find the open man. And he did. For his efforts, UCF and USF have offered within the last 24 hours.

Asiantii Woulard, Winter Park (Fla.) HS. Woulard is a USF Bulls commitment. It’s easy to see why USF took his commitment, as the 6’4, 200-pound QB has a big arm and plenty of athleticism. It was also easy to see that Woulard, who has only played a year at QB, has a long way to go. He appeared to be benched on day two due to ineffectiveness.

Underclassmen

Kyle "K.J." Carta-Samuels (2014), San Jose (Calif.) Bellarmine Prep. Carta-Samuels' brother is a quarterback for the Vanderbilt Commodores and the 6'2, 210-pound Samuels looked good during tournament play, helping to lead his team over all-star squads from Indiana, Orlando, South Florida and the Cam Newton team from Atlanta. Samuels is very athletic and should receive multiple BCS offers by this time next year.

Deshaun Watson (2014), Gainesville (Ga.) HS. Watson, a Clemson Tigers' commitment, was a star for the Cam Newton All-Stars. A wiry 6'3 and 190 pounds, Watson had arguably the best arm of any QB in the tournament. His velocity forced teams to defend the out route on the opposite side of the field. His touch does need some work, however, as his receivers repeatedly dropped balls that were too hot to handle. That probably won't be a problem in college, however, and the arm is here to stay.

Brooks Barden (2014), Cartersville (Ga.) High School. Barden was very impressive for the champs of the High School bracket. He is a solid 6’3, 200, and displayed a good arm while putting the ball on the money. Barden doesn’t report any offers but is likely to be a BCS prospect.
