Travis Johnson visiting Missouri: Can Tigers land top tight end recruit?

The Tigers will be trying to impress one of the nation’s best tight end prospects this weekend.

Bud Elliott (SB Nation)

Tight end prospect Travis Johnson, from Jesuit High School in Tampa, Fla., is visiting the Missouri Tigers this weekend. Johnson was originally a Miami Hurricanes commitment, but he decided to open his recruitment back up in December.

Johnson is considered a three-star prospect by Rivals.com and the 11th-best tight end in the class of 2013. He has offers from a number of schools, including LSU, Florida, Notre Dame, Clemson and Ohio State. Following his Missouri visit, he’s scheduled to head to Rutgers. He’s already taken a trip to Cincinnati, and it’s those two schools along with South Florida that appear to be the primary competition to Missouri for his services.

Missouri currently has 18 commitments in its 2013 class, and Rivals rates it the 36th-best group in the country. The class includes one four-star prospect -- Chase Abbington, who is one of the top players in the state of Missouri.

Bud Elliott’s take: I’ve seen Johnson in person multiple times and feel he is an underrated player. For a while he was insistent that he would play receiver, but he’ll grow nicely into a 250-pound tight end capable of splitting off the line of scrimmage. He uses his size exceptionally well in the red zone and has very strong hands.
