Roderick Bernard commits to Texas

The short recruitment of the Sharpstown playmaker came to a close Wednesday.

The Texas Longhorns added another offensive piece to their 2014 recruiting class on Wednesday with the pledge of Houston (Texas) Sharpstown wide receiver/all-purpose back Roderick Bernard.

It was a whirlwind recruitment -- though Bernard played last season with Texas A&M linebacker commit Reggie Chevis, he was not a player thought to be on the Texas radar, with no known invite to either of the Junior Days that will be held in February.

But the Longhorns went by his school, extended the offer, and Bernard was quick to shut down his recruitment. His only other reported offer is from Houston and he’s not yet rated by 247Sports, nor does he have a Rivals page.

The offer also marked a slightly different change in strategy for the Longhorns, as in the past the coaches would have invited Bernard to a Junior Day and offered him then, but Texas has been changing their policy on early offers to respond to earlier and earlier offers around the country, which has been paying early dividends.

As for what Bernard brings to the table, the first thing is speed, of which Bernard has plenty to burn. The district champ as a sophomore in both the 100m and 200m, his best time in the former is 10.81, a number he could conceivably improve upon this spring.

His reported 40 time is even more impressive:
