LSU recruiting 2013: Les Miles’ Tigers have a top-10 class so far

Despite its class being ranked No. 10 nationally, LSU has work to do if it hopes to catch Alabama, Tennessee and others.

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sport

The LSU Tigers have recruited about as well as just about any team in the country the last few seasons. Les Miles and the coaching staff have hit the recruiting trail hard for the 2014 class, and they've been rewarded by some of the nation's top prospects giving their pledge to play in Baton Rouge next year.

LSU’s current class is ranked No. 10 nationally by 24/7Sports’ composite team rankings. While that’s certainly impressive, three other SEC schools, Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee, are ahead of the Tigers at Nos. 1, 3 and 4, respectively. Right behind LSU is Texas A&M at No. 11, Florida at No. 12 and Auburn at No. 13, so it’ll really be interesting to see how the final rankings shape up as National Signing Day approaches.

Things have slowed down a bit commitment-wise in recent weeks with the high school season starting. The only player LSU’s been able to add in the last month is defensive end Davon Godchaux. He is regarded as a four-star defensive end out of Plaquemine (LA) High School, which is just down the road from Baton Rouge. At 6’4 and 265 pounds, Godchaux already has the size and strength needed to be an impact player in the SEC. It’s unlikely he starts right away for the Tigers, though he could see action on the special teams units as a freshman.

As for the rest of the class, 10 of the 15 committed players are regarded by 24/7Sports as four-star recruits. The top-ranked player is Edward Paris, a safety out of Arlington, Texas. Paris is a consensus top-50 recruit nationally and most feel he is one of the best safeties in 2014.

On the offensive side of the ball, Brandon Harris is a dual-threat quarterback who committed back in July. Harris is another Louisiana prospect with plenty of upside. He’ll need to refine his throwing mechanics a bit in college, but he possesses the arm strength and athleticism to drive opposing defenses nuts in a couple years. On the outside, Trey Quinn is a four-star wide receiver with some size at 6’1 and 200 pounds. Most view Quinn as one of the top 20 receivers in his class.
