North Carolina football recruiting 2013: Tar Heels working on top-20 class

Larry Fedora and the UNC coaching staff are putting together an impressive recruiting class despite a slow start to the season.

The North Carolina Tar Heels always seem to recruit well. Under second-year coach Larry Fedora, that trend has continued with the 2014 recruiting class.

With 22 players already committed, UNC’s current class is ranked No. 17 nationally on 24/7Sports’ composite team rankings. That’s good for fourth in the ACC, behind only Miami (ranked 5th), Florida State (6th) and Clemson (14th).

After loading up on commitments during the spring and summer months, things have slowed down a bit on the recruiting trail as the high school football season begins. The last player to give his pledge to the coaching staff was Elijah Wood on Aug. 27. A four-star running back out of Charlotte, Wood is regarded as the seventh-best running back in the nation and the fourth-best overall player in the state of North Carolina, according to 24/7Sports. At 5’11 and 220 pounds, look for him to be a short-yardage option right out of the gate as a freshman.

Josh Cabrera, a three-star wide receiver out of North Carolina, was another player to commit to the Tar Heels in August. Cabrera has some speed on the outside, and at 6’3 and 175 pounds, he has the frame to be a difference maker down the field.

While most feel Wood is the top player committed for 2014, UNC has plenty of other talent on the way. Caleb Henderson, a four-star pro-style quarterback out of Virginia, committed back in April and is viewed as the 13th-best QB in his class. Henderson has the arm strength to potentially be the starter in a couple of years, though he’s far from a finished product. Two highly-regarded offensive tackles, Bentley Spain and Caleb Samuel, are regarded as four-star talents and should really help the Tar Heels up front.
