Georgia football recruiting 2014: Dawgs keep stockpiling talent

Mark Richt has compiled quality in addition to quantity so far in this recruiting cycle.

Daniel Shirey-USA TODAY Sports

The Georgia Bulldogs have had plenty of recruiting success over the years, and that doesn't appear to be changing in the Class of 2014. Georgia's class currently ranks among the nation's best, and the Dawgs are in the hunt for several more top prospects.

Georgia has 17 players committed for the current recruiting cycle, and the Bulldogs’ class is ranked No. 4 in the country -- third in the SEC -- by the 247 Sports composite ratings. Of the 17 prospects who have pledged, 12 are rated as four stars or better by the scouting service.

Top Dawgs

The Dawgs’ class is relatively balanced, with talent spread out across several positions. That’s reflected at the top, as Georgia’s top four prospects play three different positions.

Having talent at running back is a necessity for success, especially in the SEC, and the Bulldogs are in good shape. Sony Michel is a five-star prospect, per 247 composite. Out of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., American Heritage, Michel checks in at 5’11 and 205 pounds, and he’s ranked as the No. 2 running back in the class and No. 1 player from the state of Florida. Nick Chubb, out of Cedartown, Ga., High, is a little bigger at 5’11, 216, and he’s graded as a four-star player. He’s listed as the seventh-best back in the class and fourth-best player from Georgia.

Defensive tackle Lamont Gaillard out of Fayetteville, N.C., Pine Forest High, is a four-star prospect and ranks No. 3 at his position and in his state. Four-star pro-style quarterback Jacob Park is from Stratford High in Goose Creek, S.C., and he is listed at No. 5 at his position and No. 2 in his state.

On target

The Dawgs are still looking for more elite talent to help with the pass rush. Lorenzo Carter, five-star defensive end out of Norcross (Ga.) Could be just the guy. Georgia four-star defensive tackle Elisha Shaw, and Alabama four-star outside linebacker Rashaan Evans could also help.

Georgia is also still a strong contender for four-star receiver Josh Malone, of Tennessee. Malone recently visited the UGA for their win over the LSU Tigers, and had to like what he saw with Georgia’s passing game.
