Cal football recruiting 2014: Jaleel Wadood, Devante Downs headline small class

The Bears haven’t picked up a lot of commitments at this point, but they do have some four-star talent in the fold.

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

Sonny Dykes has picked up 10 verbal commitments in his first full class at Cal; the group ranks 61st nationally and ninth in the Pac-12, per the 247Sports composite, but some of that has to do with the small size of the class.

There hasn’t been a lot of activity for the Bears of late, though they did pick up a verbal from consensus three-star safety Koa Farmer earlier this month. Farmer is considered a soft verbal, however, so it may not last.

Here’s a glance at a few of the top names in the Bears’ class:

Jaleel Wadood is a consensus four-star safety from Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco High School. He is regarded as the No. 193 overall prospect in the 2014 class, making him the highest-rated player to commit to Cal thus far. He is also ranked as the No. 13 player at his position and the No. 23 player from California.

Devante Downs is a four-star outside linebacker from Mountlake Terrace (Wash.) High School. He is regarded as the 23rd-best prospect at his position, the third-best player from Washington and the No. 308 overall player in the country.

Farmer, as noted above, is a three-star safety prospect. The Riverside (Calif.) Notre Dame High School product ranks 29th at his position and is considered the 37th-best player from California. He is the No. 365 overall prospect in the country.

Can Cal land Joe Mixon?

Joe Mixon, a five-star running back recruit from Oakley (Calif.) Freedom High School is by far the best recruit on Cal’s board. Mixon would be an enormous get for Cal, and because of his versatility, he might immediately be the best player on Cal’s offense, even as a true freshman. Cal must battle Oklahoma, USC and Florida State for his signature. Cal’s season has been a disaster, but it will heavily sell the angles of location and playing time.
