Ohio State football recruiting: Buckeyes’ class led by several top-100 prospects

Ohio State has compiled one of the top recruiting classes in the nation.

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

Urban Meyer is cleaning up on the recruiting trail, though that isn’t surprising given his history or the fact that we’re talking about Ohio State here. The Buckeyes currently have 18 verbals for 2014, and the class ranks second nationally, according to the 247Sports composite. It’s the top group in the Big Ten.

All of Ohio State’s commitments came during the offseason, the most recent from four-star running back/safety prospect Curtis Samuel, who pledged in mid-August. Samuel is one of several top-100 players the Buckeyes have in the fold.

Here are some of other top names in OSU’s class:

Damon Webb is a consensus four-star cornerback prospect from Detroit (Mich.) Cass Technical High School. He is the No. 40 overall player in the 2014 class, making him Ohio State’s highest-rated prospect. He is the No. 6 player at his position and the second-best player from Michigan.

Chicago (Ill.) De La Salle Institute’s Jamarco Jones is a four-star offensive tackle. Jones is regarded as the No. 51 overall prospect and the No. 4 player at his position. He is ranked as the third-best player from Illinois.

Four-star outside linebacker Dante Booker hails from St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron, Ohio. He is the third-best prospect at his position, the second-best player in the state of Ohio and the No. 65 overall prospect in the country.

Jalyn Holmes is a four-star defensive end from Norfolk (Va.) Lake Taylor High School. He is regarded as the No. 72 overall prospect in the 2014 class, and the fourth-best player both at his position and in the state of Virginia.

On target

The Buckeyes certainly are not done. Several elite targets are still on the board.

  • Inside linebacker Raekwon McMillan, of Hinesville (Ga.) Liberty County, is a five-star who has long favored the Buckeyes. Ohio State will battle Clemson and Alabama for his signature.
  • Four-star defensive tackle Thomas Holley, of New York, is also very high on Ohio State. Holley also likes Notre Dame and Penn State.
  • Four-star JUCO offensive tackle Chad Mavety, also of New York, is an intense battle between Ohio State and Florida State.
  • Four-star cornerback Marshon Lattimore, of Cleveland (Ohio) Glenville, has long favored the Buckeyes.
  • And Lattimore’s teammate, four-star safety Erick Smith, is also a strong, strong lean to the Buckeyes.
